Going Green: Tip of the Week - Soaps and Disposals

1. Use a shaving brush and shaving soap mug to avoid buying aerosol shaving cream. Buy local handmade shaving soaps, support local businesses, and smell good to boot. Even better, buy all your soaps from local handmade sources; they are much nicer and smell better. Shampoos are more of a challenge.

2. Use a natural deodorant (with caution to make sure it functions) and avoid overly packaged deodorants with Aluminum Silicate or Aluminum Hydroxide, which has been linked to Alzheimer's.

3. Don't use your garbage disposal. Instead, get a worm bin or compost pile instead (be prepared to deal with critters). Home Eco sells small compost containers and bags.

4. Bring your own mug to the coffee shop and urge them to give you a discount when using it. Support Fair Trade coffee. Also, bring your own cup whenever you are likely to get a disposable one, such as at a fast food restaurant.

5. Bring your own shopping bag to the grocery store. These are really cool!

6. When at the supermarket, politely inform the management that plastic bags are on the extinction list and are slowly being outlawed (Seattle is the first major U.S. city to begin charging for each bag). Also consider politely leaving excess packaging or non-recyclable packing in the store so they have to deal with it instead of you, the consumer. This will begin to pressure their suppliers to reduce its use and to choose more sustainable solutions. If you go this route, do it in a fun way as opposed to being smug or "holier than thou."

7. Go to your local farmer's market and avoid the grocery store altogether!
